Don’t be a Grinch.

This is the first year that I won’t be with my family for Christmas.  And by family  – I mean my parents and my brother.  Luckily, I have a shit ton of other family members anywhere and everywhere so I can’t do anything with at least two of them showing up to get the party started.

With that said, here is my little guide to make the holidays go by as smoothly as possible.  This is more of a list to make myself feel better. But you can read it if you want… or don’t. (You should probably read it.)

Make someone you love happy.

My broke college student baby brother got a new phone out of this one.  You’re welcome.

But seriously, it could be as easy as sending cards to people or if you’re extremely lazy – text messages to people that you haven’t been the best about staying in touch with.

Or maybe its cleaning the entire house for your roommates since it seems like the monsters in your closet are continuously ransacking your drawers and irrationally large shoe collection and spreading it around for all to see.  It’s hard to get those guys under control sometimes.

Spike your coffee. (Or tea. Or hot chocolate. Or whatever. I’m not biased.)

I can’t remember the last morning I woke up with a cup of coffee that didn’t contain Bailey’s, Kahlua or just straight vodka/whiskey.  My rule is that if it is below 32 degrees, you need to; if there is someone willing to drink with you, you deserve to; if you are going to the mountains, you have to; and if there happens to be any days in between then you must.

Buy something for yourself.

Whether it be a Chipotle burrito or a new pair of shoes – get in the spirit and give a gift to the most important person in your life.  You.

If you need any shopping tips or help – holla at me.  I’m an expert in all things involving spending other people’s money.

Eat the fucking pie.

Shut up and just eat it.  ALL of it.  Don’t even use a fork if you don’t want to. Extra whipped cream, please.

Start new traditions.

I’ve never been a huge Christmas person to begin with but there are some things that you do every year that makes it just feel right.  This year we are doing brunch and opening presents at my cousins new house in adult onesies.  I get mega excited when my ideas become reality.

Make yourself happy.

This should be both the easiest and hardest of everything on the list.  Figure out what it is you want and go get it.

Go to the party.

You might not want to go and you might not know a lot of people there but that’s what’s going to make it fun.  So, unless you’re allergic to fun – go.  Who knows who you could meet – a new friend, lover, boss… sky is the limit. Worse comes to worst you can jack a bottle of wine on your way out and be on your merry way.

Now go and spread all that warm and fuzziness around.
